About the Artist

Chibueze Crouch-Anyarogbu (they/them/Ọ or she/her) is an Igbo-American artist working across performance, song, text, improvisational movement and film, often in immersive and site-specific settings. Their practice explores communal wounds, embodied archives, memory and queer Afro-Diasporic syncretisms, using dramaturgical research, spiritual ritual, and writing as starting points.

They are co-director of OYSTERKNIFE, a postdisciplinary performance company, with Gabriele Christian, as well as a founding artist organizer at BlaQyard, a Black queer artist collective, land project & community space. They are the 2019 RHE Foundation Fellowship recipient, a 2021 California Arts Council Established Artist Fellow, and the inaugural Zellerbach Family Foundation Fellow. Chibueze has been an artist-in-residence in San Francisco, Oakland, Point Reyes, Biddeford, Maine, and Johannesburg, South Africa. They are also a curator and producer of emerging and established performing artists, as former co-director of the Performance Primers, Queering Dance Festival and ROT Festival, formerly known as FRESH Festival.

Chibueze has presented work with numerous institutions, including: BANDALOOP, UC Santa Cruz, Theatre Bay Area, CounterPulse, Medea Project: Theatre for Incarcerated Women, Joe Goode Performance Group, Playwrights Foundation, Radar Productions, Santiago a Mil International Theater Festival, Yale University, Trinidad Theatre Workshop, Mupa Budapest, Flux Projects, Crowded Fire Theater, and the Black Choreographer's Festival.
