I graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London in September 2025, receiving an MA with distinction in World Performances, Theatres, & Cultures. In April 2026, I published an excerpt of my MA thesis in print and online for ‘Stance on Dance’ magazine, a dance and movement journal based in the San Francisco/Bay Area. My graduate research focused on gender dynamics in Igbo masquerade traditions, specifically the origins of women’s exclusion from this male-dominated ritual theater practice. However, using oral histories I collected in Southeastern Nigeria, I documented and analyzed evidence of women’s participation and even origination of masquerade in certain parts of Igboland. This excerpt details an emerging counterhistory of Igbo women’s masquerade, grounded in what I call the “embodied archives” of indigenous historiographic practice (ie: oral tradition).
